Opening an Image File in Photoshop

This Exercise will help students to understand the scenarios/Techniques of opening image in Photoshop.

Techniques (Scenarios)
Images can be opened in the following scenarios.

  1. Opening image into its own canvas.
  2. Opening image on another canvas.
When & Which Techniques is to be Used 
  • Opening image into its own canvas.
    • This technique will be used when an image is to be edited. For example 
      • We need to remove background from the image.
      • We need to make adjustments, such as color balance, levels and contrast etc..
  • Opening image on Another Canvas.
    • This technique will be used when an image is to be used as an design element. For example 
      • We need to place image as a background. 
      • We need to place images of products in an advertisement banner, images of students on the flyer of a school etc..  Note* These example are not the only case.. 
Methods of Opening Image
    • Following are the methods of Opening image into Photoshop.
    • Method 1 (Open Image into its Own Canvas)
      • Step1: Click on File Menu
      • Step2: Click on "Open" Option. (Ctrl + O)
      • Step3: Browse folder for the image.
      • Step4: Click on image, which is to be selected.
      • Step5: Click on open option.

    • Method 2 (Open Image On another Canvas)
      • Step1: Click on File Menu
      • Step2: Click on "Place" Option. 
      • Step3: Browse folder for the image.
      • Step4: Click on image, which is to be selected.
      • Step5: Click on place option
    • Method 3 (Open Image: into its Own/Another Canvas)
      • This method is a Drag & Drop method.It is very fast and commonly used by designers. But this is a bit tricky, Because it can be used in both scenarios of opening image.
      • Step1: Open the folder from where image is to be selected.
      • Step2: Click and Hold on the Image, which is to be opened.
      • Step3: Drag mouse and bring it over the Photoshop shop icon on the "Task Bar". (Don't Release Click)
      • Step4: When Photoshop gets automatically opened, 
      • Step5: Release Mouse Click (which was hold in step 2)
