This exercise will help students to understand the concept of "Selection" & Selection Tools which can be used for multipurpose.

What is Selection?
A Selection is the specifically defined area on the canvas" . 

What is the Purpose of Selection ?
Following are the purposes of selection . A Selected area can be 
  • copied to be pasted on another canvas.
  • deleted from an image.
  • filled by a color to make a raster shape.
  • converted into a vector path to from a vector shape
  • used to align design elements within it.
What Are Marching Ants?
Marching ants are the moving dashed lines, which defines and highlight the boundary of a selection.

What is Deselect?
The term Deselect refers to the removal of selection.
 
How to Deselect selection?
  1. Click on "Select Menu"
  2. Click on "Deselect" option.  (Short Cut : Ctrl + D )
What is Re-select?
The term Re-select refers to the "selection of the same area" again.

How to Re-select selection?
  1. Click on "Select Menu"
  2. Click on "Reselect" option.  (Short Cut : Ctrl + Shift + D )
What Does "Move Selection" mean?
Move selection means moving the selection to "select a new area or adjust previous selection.

How to Move Selection?
Selection can only be moved with the help of any selection tool such as..
  1. Rectangular Marquee Tool
  2. Elliptical Marquee Tool
  3. Single Row Marquee Tool
  4. Single Column Marquee Tool
  5. Lasso Tool
  6. Polygonal Lasso Tool
  7. Magnetic Lasso Tool
  8. Magic Wand Tool
  9. Quick Selection Tool
But make sure that "New Selection" property of the selection tool must be active.

Can we Move Selection with the Help of Move tool ?
No, selection can not be moved with the help of selection tool. If you try to move a selected area with the help of move tool, the portion of the layer within the selection will moving.. See Example Below.

  • Lasso tool is used to make "free-from" or "rough" selection .
