In this exercise student will understand the usage and purpose of Paint Bucket & Gradient Tool.


Paint Bucket Tool
Paint Bucket tool is used to fill a specific area of an image. Fill is either a Color or a Pattern.

Properties of Paint Bucket Tool
  1. Source for Fill : It gives user the option whether to use Foreground Color OR Pattern as fill.
  2. Fill Mode: Fill modes are used to blend the fill with underlying layers.
  3. Opacity - It refers to the visibility/ transparency of the fill
  4. Tolerance- It refers to the range of colors in the fill. 
  5. Contiguous - If the Contiguous options is checked, fill will be applied to only those pixel which are attached to each other while If the Contiguous options is un-checked, fill will be applied to all pixels having similar colors.

How to use Paint Bucket Tool
  1. Select Paint Bucket Tool
  2. Select Source i.e Foreground or Pattern
  3. Set Blending Mode, Opacity, Tolerance  AND/OR Contiguous (Optional - If required)
  4. Click on the area where fill is to be applied.

Gradient Tool
A gradient is the step by step blending from one color to another. So this tool helps to apply gradients in the design or image.

    Properties of Gradient Tool
    1. Gradient Picker / Edit - Gradient can be picked or customized through this property.
    2. Gradient Type Property - Gradient types can be selected from this menu. In Adobe Photoshop there are 5 types of Gradient
      1. Liner
      2. Radial
      3. Angle
      4. Reflected
      5. Diamond
    3. Blend Mode:Blending modes are used to blend the gradient with underlying layers.
    4. Opacity - It refers to the visibility/ transparency of the gradient
    5. Reverse - It reverse the gradient colors
    6. Dither - Helps to reduce banding in the colors
    7. Transparency - It is used to control the transparency feature of the gradient.

How to use Sharpen Tool
  1. Select Gradient Tool
  2. Pick a Gradient
  3. Select Gradient Type
  4. Set Blending Mode, Opacity, Reverse, Dither AND/OR Transparency(Optional - If required)
  5. Hold Left Mouse Button & Drag the mouse pointer form a gradient
  6. Release Mouse button
